Spiral arms and bars in early galaxies may have been the key to their high star formation rates, according to new research. This challenges the long-held belief that early galaxies were chaotic and messy, with gas moving inefficiently. Instead, these massive disk galaxies with bars and spiral arms efficiently moved cold gas around, driving their high star formation rates. This finding is based on two new papers, which reveal that spiral arms and bars were already well-established in these Cosmic Noon galaxies, channeling gas into the inner regions and feeding star formation. The results provide a new understanding of the first galaxies, their morphologies, and how they sustained high star formation rates over billions of years. This challenges our previous understanding of early galaxies and suggests that these structures played a crucial role in their evolution.
